Statue of Morena Paulus Mopeli

The statue of the chief who brought the Bakoena to QwaQwa, with the roll of those who followed him.

About this place

Morena Paulus Mopeli Mokhachane was a half-brother of Moshoeshoe I. He brought his followers, the Bakoena, over to this side of the mountains in the 1860s, and the land they were given became QwaQwa. He died in 1897.

The plaque below the statue is headed Tatelano ea borena bo boholo - the line of the great chieftainship - and reads:

Mopeli Paulus, to 1897

Ntsane I, 1897 to 1918

Ramatšeliso Charles, 1918 to 1962

Ntsane Arthur II, 1962 to 1965

Mofumahadi Mampoi, 1965 to 1978

Motebang, 1978 to 1993

Mofumahadi Mathokoana, 1993 to 2007

Thokoana Mopeli II, from 2007

Mofumahadi is the title for a woman holding the chieftainship, and two of the eight were women. The Dihwai tsa Mampoi tournament carries the name of one of them.

Published accounts disagree on whether the land was ceded in 1866 or in 1867. If the house keeps its own account of it, tell us and we will put it right.
